Aug 2nd...also known as my 18th Birthday!!

Today was my birthday :)First of all i have to say it was sad being on the other side of the ocean from all my friends and family!! i did still have a nice day. at breakfast everyone sang me a Swedish birthday song. i found it really funny because only 2 campers here speak Swedish and plus everyone was still half asleep. Today was also our first activity day. After breakfast we went to an island called Hano by bus and ferry. Hano is a small island on which only 60 people live. We first went to Missionshuset which is the church of the island. There, a woman gave us some information about the British Navy. Afterward we had some time to look at an exhibition about swedish history and how the British navy fits in. The British used this island as a resting spot on their way to Stockholm. and i think they also helped defend sweden from russia and denmark. Afterwards we went to Hanoeborg (the resturant/ dinning hall) to learn more about British Navy who comes to the island every year to celebrate. We left our bags there and walked up a hill to get to the highest point of the island. There we could see a beautiful lighthouse which is very important for the ships to make sure they dont bump into the island as it can get really foggy, like it was today. It is the 2nd brightest lighthouse along the Baltic Coast, andt was built in 1908 and is 16m high. After some time, we reached a cemetery where British sailors were buried during Napileonic war.
Afterwards we went back to Hanoeborg where we had lunch. And we also got to try some waffles from the café. After lunch, we went down to harbor where we met some voluntary workers from the sea rescue team. We had chance to take a ride on their boat which was a lot of fun! it went so fast i was worried my glasses would fall off, infact they did once (luckily i didnt lose them into the ocean) Some of the other camp member were brave enough to jump into the freezing water after our ride in the boats. Then we went back home and had dinner. Later we all had an ice cream cake, i guess in celebration of my birthday. After we met 2 Lions members that told us all about the activities for the next day. I think everyone really enjoyed the day. i especially enjoyed it since it was my birthday!

  1. What a way to celebrate your 18th birthday in a foreign country.
